Osteopathy for Babies

Osteopaths in London : Cranial osteopathy for babies and children

The arrival of a baby is a big transition for both baby and parents. Birth can involve a range of physical stresses, particularly after a long or difficult labour or an assisted delivery such as forceps or ventouse. Sometimes parents simply feel that their baby is not quite comfortable or settled, and would like them to be gently assessed.

Some babies appear completely comfortable after birth. Others may show signs that they are finding the transition more difficult, such as being unsettled, having difficulty winding, or struggling to find a comfortable position and would benefit from osteopathic care.

During an osteopathic appointment, I take time to observe your baby and assess their movement, comfort and overall physical wellbeing. Any treatment is gentle and adapted to your baby's age and individual needs.

When might parents consider bringing their baby to see an osteopath?

Is your baby experiencing things such as:

  • Difficulty winding or seeming uncomfortable after feeds

  • Difficulty settling or frequent unsettled periods

  • A preference for turning the head to one side

  • Tension or reduced ease of movement around the neck

  • A noticeable flattening or asymmetry of the head

  • Concerns following a difficult or assisted birth

These symptoms can have many different causes, and osteopathy is not always the appropriate treatment. Where necessary, I will recommend that you speak with your GP, health visitor, paediatrician or another appropriate healthcare professional.

What happens during a baby's appointment?

Your baby's comfort comes first. I will ask about the pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleeping and anything else you have noticed since your baby arrived.

I then observe how your baby moves and behaves and, where appropriate, carry out a gentle physical assessment. If treatment is considered suitable, techniques are very light and are adapted to your baby's age and individual presentation.

There is never any pressure to proceed with treatment. If I feel that your baby would benefit from assessment by another healthcare professional, I will discuss this with you.
