Osteopathy for Babies & Children
After birth it is important to have a “check up” with an osteopath, even if your baby doesn’t show any symptoms, there might be some retained tensions that could later lead to symptoms such as bowel discomfort, tiredness, sleeping disturbance etc..
Many babies when born may have an altered shape to their head either from intra-uterine strain, forceps or ventouse deliveries. They may also suffer a tense neck and shoulders. These stresses, however , are normally resolved during the first few days after birth as the baby begins to cry, suck and yawn. This helps to dissipate some of the effects of these excessive forces. Some babies don’t cope well with retained stresses, display a variety of problems including:
-
Difficulty winding
-
Digestive discomfort
-
Sleeping disturbance
-
Irritability, poor sleeping and inability to relax
-
Flattening head on one side of an infant’s head
Osteopathy & pregnancy
Osteopathy is a safe and effective treatment during the pregnancy. Your body has to adapt to major changes in a very short period of time. This can create aches in your lower back, tension in your upper back, heartburn, constipation, pelvic girdle pain, etc…
Osteopathy can be beneficial to relieve numerous aches and pains as the body adapts to the growing baby when, as we know, not many medications are allowed during pregnancy. The aim of osteopathic treatment is to re-align the body and reduce muscular tension and joint strain so the body can cope more easily with the changes of pregnancy.
Following labour, treatment also helps to ensure that the pelvis and lower back are returned to a comfortable position.
Osteopathy & Post-Natal
At Osteo London, we care about the post-natal stage. We recognise that each birth is different. We can adapt and personalised our treatments so it is specific for each mum.
We work in collaboration with Pilates instructors, Yoga teachers and Midwives in Central London. This can ensure your recovery is individualised and the best advice and approach can be suggested.
Postnatal treatment is recommended to help the body return to the pre-pregnant state, treat any residual trauma from the birth and to avoid possible and unnecessary complications in later pregnancies.
Treatment can help with general tension and muscle soreness due to incorrect feeding positions. We can advise you how to support yourself optimally during this time. In addition, other postnatal problems such as headaches, sciatica, inability to relax, coccyx and pelvic pains generally respond very well to osteopathic treatment.
Balancing tensions in the body will help to relax, improve confidence and to boost vitality for the new mum and so allow her to spend quality time with her baby.
