What is osteopathy ?

What is Osteopathy ?

Osteopathy is a primary healthcare system, complementary to other medical practices based on biomedical sciences. It takes a holistic approach to the body and internal systems. An important principle of osteopathy is the stimulation of the body's natural self-healing mechanisms.

Osteopaths treat the whole person and consider all aspects of the patient's life, enabling them to maintain optimum health. On your first consultation, your osteopath will compile a detailed case history, followed by a thorough examination. The main tool used for diagnosis and osteopathic treatment is touch. Analysis of your body's movements is also an important aspect. Once a diagnosis is reached and explained to you, your osteopath will use a wide range of manual techniques suitable for your treatment.

Osteopathic treatment helps uncover the cause and also act to relieve symptoms you may have. These techniques include:

  • Articulation work
  • Trigger-point therapy
  • Stretching
  • Gentle joint manipulation
  • Soft tissue and myofascial techniques
  • Visceral manipulation
  • Cranial osteopathy

What is cranial osteopathy ?

London Osteopath - cranial osteopathy - headaches- stress- migraines

Cranial osteopathy is a refined part of osteopathy treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body. It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach, the technique uses very skilled, light pressure to evaluate ease of motion and rhythm within sensitive tissues, and through this mechanism can activate the body’s natural corrective healing abilities.

It aims to relieve discomfort and improve the body’s function and treat the whole person not just the condition.

As the treatment is non-invasive and also uses no drugs it is particularly useful for treating babies and yound children.

Visceral

What is Visceral Manipulation ?

London Osteopath :Visceral manipulation - Barral techniques- bloating- periods pain- constipation- women's health

The French osteopath Jean Pierre Barral's clinical work with the viscera (organs) led to the development of a specific form of manual medicine: visceral manipulation (VM).

All of our organs are suspended within the musculoskeletal system via specific fascial connections. Visceral osteopaths recognise this relationship and use their palpatory skills to assess the motion of the viscera and their fascial attachments. Gentle and safe techniques are then applied to release any tension present.

The following conditions  respond particularly well to visceral manipulation in combination with other osteopathic techniques:

  • Period pain

  • Constipation, bloating and IBS

  • Breathing disorders and asthma

  • Surgery scars

  • Pelvic pain from uterine, vaginal or bladder prolapse.
